Valentine Martin
Thank you to those who have contacted me and added information! As I have been continuing to work on the Martins, I’ve discovered that Jesse Martin, Sr. (b.1783 NC). and his wife Mary came to Missouri between 1810-1820. His father’s name was Valentine Martin, and he had two brothers, William and Job. All three of these brothers moved to Cooper County, Missouri.
William and his family stayed in Cumberland County (later Monroe County), Kentucky until after 1820. Then he and his large family also moved to Missouri. Four of his sons were already married and had families of their own.
If anyone has further information about the father, Valentine Martin, please contact me. He was born about 1750, and his wife’s name was Mary.

How the County Seat of Moniteau County got its name

The city of California occupies a site officially selected for a county seat in 1845 when the county was organized. It was officially named Boonesborough, a name which was discarded in compliance with the postal authorities because of the existence of another Boonesborough in the state.
The original town of California, which had been in existence for ten years, was located about a mile east of the site chosen. Walter Garner established a blacksmith shop there in 1834. Shortly thereafter a saloon and residence were built by Samuel Hand and J. Anderson. At the log raising it is said that California Wilson, a brother of Mrs. Garner, offered the builders a treat of two gallons of whiskey, worth at that time 25 cents a gallon, if they would name the new town after him. Thus the name California. Several stores, another saloon, a hotel, a cabinet shop, and a carding machine were in operation before Moniteau County was created.
On account of its geographical location near the center of the county an attempt was made to have the county seat of the new county located at California. The county court, not being able to secure the land desired at a price they were willing to pay, selected a new site in a cornfield a mile west.

Harvey Martin 60th Wedding Anniversary

MARRIED 60 YEARS
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Martin Quietly Observe Event
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Martin quietly observed their sixtieth wedding anniversary at their home on the Corcicelli road about three miles southeast of California Sunday.
No public announcement was made of the event but Mr. and Mrs. Martin mentioned it to a few of their friends. The word got around and numerous persons called in the course of the day.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin were married on March 7, 1889, in the 90-year-old house where they now reside, then the home of her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Dan Crawford. The ceremony was performed by Bob Garrison, a neighbor of the Crawford family who was a justice of the peace.
Throughout the first 15 years of their married life, Mr. and Mrs. Martin resided on farms in the vicinity of their present home and spent a year in Olean in the mercantile business. Forty-five years ago they located on her father’s farm and it has been their home ever since. Some of the land has been sold off until the place now conprises only 43 acres where Mr. Martin, who was 81 years old March 3, keep a cow, a few chickens, raise their meat hogs and enjoy the companionship of one another. Both are in fair health.
Of the one daughter and three sons born to the Martins, two sons, John and Henry, are deceased. Their daughter, Mrs. August Peters, resides on a farm to the east of them and their son Jesse on a farm two miles to the south. They have 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Mr. Martin, a son of the late Rev. and Mrs. Jesse Martin, was born and raised near the Martin school north of California, and is the last survivor of a family of eight children. Mrs. Martin, born and reared at the place where they now reside, has one brother living, Ed Crawford of Minneapolis, Minn.
Mr. Martin has been a member of Friendship Baptist Church the past 60 years and Mrs. Martin has been a member nearly that long.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin’s sixtieth wedding anniversary cake was baked by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jesse Martin.
Ten years ago the Martins celebrated their golden wedding with an open house.
